Micromax Canvas A114 Video review

The Micromax Canvas A114 or the Micromax Canvas 2.2 is powered by a new breed of quad core chipset the MediaTek MT6582 clocked at 1.3GHz. This handset sports a 5 inch screen with qHD resolution and comes for a price tag of under Rs. 12,000.Inside the box you will find the handset, earphone, charger, data cable, some download goodies from Micromax, User Guide, 2000 mAh battery and warranty statement.

Look wise there is nothing new with the Micromax A114, in fact most of the canvas series follow the same design pattern. The A114 weighs about 153 grams with battery, thickness is 9.74mm, breadth is 72.71mm and length is 145.23mm.Handset has got curvy edges. Power button is placed on the right, volume rockers on left, micro USB and 3.5mm audio jack on the top. MMX A114 Sar value is 0.21 W/kg @ 1g (head) and 0.39 W/kg @ 1g (body).

The 5 inch IPS screen supports 960×540 pixels resolution with 16M colors ~ 220.29ppi. Viewing angles are okay. Touch is smooth and responsive. There is LED notification. This dual SIM (Normal SIM slot) handset runs on Android 4.2.2 OS. There are accelerometer, light and proximity sensors.Memory and Storage Of the 4GB internal storage 1.42GB is allocated as phone storage (1.2GB free) and 1GB as internal storage. And of the 1GB RAM 768MB is available. You can install and move apps on external storage. OTG is also supported.

The Micromax Canvas 2.2 comes powered by 1.3GHz MT6582 quad core processor with Mali 400 GPU. The performance is pretty smooth and the benchmark scores are quite impressive. This quad core chipset is different from the MT6589 that we have seen on many other handsets like the Micromax A116 and the Lava Iris 504q. In fact the benchmark scores are even better than the Micromax Magnus A117 that comes with 1.5GHz MT6589T processor (though screen resolution and camera output is better on A117).

The camera quality is good enough but I still like the Magnus A117 quality. I shot some images in auto mode. On some images there is too much of the yellow tint. The rear 8MP auto focus camera with LED flash can record videos in full HD resolution. Video quality is good. This handset can easily play full HD videos with ease. There is 2MP front camera that can be used for video chats. When recording videos the auto focus does not work you need to tap the screen (subject) to focus.

I could install MC4 (Modern combat 4) and Asphalt 8 on the external SD card. Game play was extremely smooth and could play Asphalt 8 in highest graphics mode with ease.I did not find any issues with 3G, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. Sound is loud and clear. GPS on the Micromax A114 is just awesome. I am not sure if it is on the handset that I reviewed but would want to get a confirmation from other users too, those using the A114. I got the first GPS lock in… well almost instantly.

The 2000 mAh battery as per the company will give talk time of up to 7 hours on 2G networks. I ran the benchmark apps for about 19 minutes, the battery dropped by 13% and 8% drop in battery when playing high end games for approx 10 minutes.

The qHD resolution is kind of disappointing; however, in general the handset seems quite powerful. The benchmark scores say a lot and gaming experience is also pretty smooth. Performance wise the Micromax canvas A114 seems better than the Magnus A117.For the price of under Rs. 12,000 the Micromax Canvas 2.2 A114 is definitely worthy. Watch out for more 1.3GHz MT6582 powered handsets.

XOLO Q2000 Video Review

The XOLO Q2000 made headlines a few weeks back, it comes powered by the MT6589 processor clocked at 1.2GHz. The key attraction is a bigger body of 5.5 inch screen with HD resolution. The Q2000 is priced at Rs. 13,999.

Inside the box you will find the handset, screen guard, data cable, OTG cable, a free flip cover, 2600 mAh battery, earphone, warranty booklet and user guide. On the box it’s clearly mentioned that OTG is supported.

The phone is bulky – weight is 186 grams, thickness is 9.65mm, breadth is 77.80mm and length is over 154mm. Look wise it is pretty impressive. Though it might feel a little bigger in the palm, cause of the design and 5.5 inch screen, the Q2000 is an attention seeker. Build quality and finishing is very good. The rear back cover is very thin and seems delicate.

The greyish – black glossy side along with the rear black color blends well. Rear side is with matte finish (feels like rubber).Volume rockers are placed on the left, power button on the right, mic at the bottom and 3.5mm audio jack and micro USB port on the top. On the rear the camera portion is a bit outward.

XOLO Q2000 comes with a 5.5 inch IPS screen with 1280×720 pixels resolution. It supports 4 point multi touch, touch is smooth and responsive plus viewing angles are also good. There are accelerometer, proximity and light sensors.

This dual SIM handset comes with 8GB onboard storage and 1GB RAM. There is micro SD card slot that supports external 32GB cards. You can install apps on external storage.

0.98GB is assigned for apps, 5.44GB as internal storage and 598MB is the free RAM available after the first boot. OTG is supported. This handset runs on Android 4.2 OS.

On the box the chipset mentioned is MT6589W, however it is MT6589 – the same that we have seen on Lava Iris 504q, Zen Ultrafone 701 and the Micromax A116. Q2000 is powered by 1.2GHz quad core MT6589 chipset with PowerVR SGX 544MP GPU.

There is 13MP rear auto focus camera with LED flash and front camera of 3MP resolution. The still image quality is good. On the box it is mentioned that the handset can record and play full HD videos, unfortunately when I tested, it could record only in VGA (640x480p) resolution. I tried all of the video quality options but it always recorded in VGA resolution. It seems like an issue with the camera app as the hardware is capable of recording FHD videos. Probably XOLO will come out with an update to fix this issue.

Key Features of XOLO Q2000
  • Expandable Storage Capacity of 32 GB
  • 1.2 GHz Quad Core Processor
  • Wi-Fi Enabled
  • Android v4.2 (Jelly Bean) OS

XOLO Q900 Video Review

The XOLO Q900 is another 1.2GHz quad core powered handset with a smaller screen of 4.7 inches with HD resolution. It is with the same hardware that we have seen on lava Iris 504q and the Micromax canvas A116 HD.

The XOLO Q900 looks beautiful thanks to the glossy white finish and the silver lining that surrounding the front screen. The build quality is very good that gives a premium look. The handset weight is 156 grams with battery, thickness is 10.16mm, breadth is 70.46mm and length is 137.34mm.

The 4.7 inch TFT screen is not scratch resistant and hence a screen guard is included in the box. Screen resolution is 1280×720 pixels and viewing angles are good. There is accelerometer, light, proximity, orientation and magnetic sensors.

The dot matrix is easily visible on the handset. If you tilt the handset a little bit in switched off mode you can see many dots (matrix). This is normal – this on screen dot matrix was reported on many other handsets. The dots are also visible when you are viewing the screen with a white background – it looks like dust particles.

There is 1GB RAM and 4GB internal storage. Of the 4GB storage 1.80GB is allocated as phone storage and 0.98GB as storage for apps. Of the 1GB RAM, 584MB is available (on the first boot after Unboxing). There is micro SD card slot that supports 32GB storage. Most of the apps / games can be installed on the external storage. OTG is not supported.

The Q900 comes with 8MP rear camera with flash. The camera quality is pretty good. It can record 1080p videos. There is front camera too of 2MP resolution. The handset can play full HD videos. The 1800 mAh battery gives talk time of up to 10 hours this is what the company claims. I used the handset for about 31 minutes (for download and ran the entire benchmark test) the battery dropped by 13% and temperature increased from 34 to 44 degree. I played some games for about 13 minutes – the battery dropped by 6%.

Micromax Canvas Tab Video Review

The Micromax Canvas Tab P650 is here to compete with the Samsung Galaxy Tab. The P650 is loaded with 1.2GHz quad core processor running 4.2 Jelly Bean OS with 1GB RAM and 16GB storage. This tablet is priced at under Rs. 16,500 is it worth it, find out.

The box looks attractive and is quite heavy. The Sar value is mentioned on the box – 1.00 W/Kg@1gm head and 1.49 W/kg@1gm body. Inside you will find the tablet attached with a good quality snap cover. Other accessories included are power adapter, data cable, earphone and warranty statement / user manual.

The Micromax Canvas Tab P650 tablet weight is 448 grams without snap cover, the weight with snap cover is over 500 grams (585 grams). Tab is 9.55mm thick. The P650 has got curved edges and available in blue and white (sliver) colors. The one that I used for the review is shiny silver color with matte finish and the snap cover is white color.

The snap cover is something that you might have seen with the Apple iPad. You can fold it and use it as a stand, check the review video. The cover comes with a plastic case – the tablet is clipped in. Volume rockers are placed on the right side along with micro USB port and a single SIM slot that houses a normal SIM. This tablet supports 3G with phone functionality. The power button, 3.5mm audio jack and micro USB port is placed on the top.

There is no dedicated buttons on the front panel, when you power on the tablet you will get the onscreen buttons. There is in call speaker and front camera of 2MP resolution. The Build quality and finishing is very good, though the tab feels a bit heavy.

The Micromax Canvas Tab P650 runs on Android 4.2.1 and sports an 8 inch screen with 1024×658 pixels with 16M colors, but because of the absence of dedicated navigation buttons the usable screen resolution is 976×768 pixels. There are accelerometer, orientation and magnetic sensors. The magnetic sensor is indeed present and may sound weird as most of the Micromax handsets never come with this particular sensor.

RAM is 1GB of which 650 MB is available and of the 16GB storage 1.73 GB is allocated for apps (1.59GB free) and 10.95GB as USB storage (it’s a tab and hence they used the word USB storage instead of phone storage). There is micro SD card slot that supports 32GB card. You can install / move apps on external storage. I tried connecting a pen drive using OTG cable, and it doesn’t work. OTG not supported.

The rear auto focus camera is 5MP resolution without LED flash. Still image long shots are okay and close ups are good. The camera can record videos in 1080p resolution at 30fps the video quality is also good. There is a 2MP front camera, its fixed focus. Check out the samples and video at the end.5MP Auto Focus camera on Micromax Canvas Tab p650.I tried Dead Trigger in high graphics mode and Asphalt 7, both these games worked smoothly without any issues. The games got installed on the external SD card. I then tried the MC4 (Modern combat 4) that unfortunately did not work.

There is built in 3G, you can use the handset as a phone, either via Bluetooth, earphone or simply place the in-call speaker near the ear and talk (this might look odd cause of the size). 3G, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth worked well. I did not get the time to check the GPS, but I think you should get a lock within 30 seconds easily. Speaker volume is much louder and clear. The 4800 mAh Li-ion battery gives a talk-time of up to 10 hours and usage time of up to 5 hours. I played some games for about 16 minutes and battery level dropped to 6% and temp rose by 2 degrees, the max temp was 35 degrees.

Conclusion
The MMX Canvas Tab competes with Samsung Galaxy tab. If you compare it with the Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 (T211) (with 8GB and 3G), there is much more that the P650 is offering, the price is near about the same. It will be interesting to see what Xolo Tegra Note will be priced at.Of course Canvas Tab P650 is a better option specs wise but brand wise Samsung still rules. Nevertheless Canvas Tab is a good option with snap cover.

Key Features of MICROMAX CANVAS TAB P650

  • FM Radio with Recording
  • Android v4.2.1 (Jelly Bean) OS

Micromax Canvas Ego A113 Video review

Micromax A113 Canvas Ego gives a premium feel, however for the price its doesn't seem a good buy. The camera quality is no good and 1080p videos cannot be played or recorded. On the positive side high ends games work pretty smooth. For Rs. 12K there are better options available.

Micromax Canvas Ego A113 is a dual SIM handset powered by 1.2GHz qualcomm processor running Android Jelly Bean OS with 1GB RAM. The Micromax A113 sports a 4.7 inch screen with qHD resolution. The handset is priced at Rs. 11,999.

The sar value as mentioned on the box – 0.50 W/kg @ 1gm head and 0.83 W/kg @ 1gm body. Inside the box you will find the grey colour handset, 2000 mAh battery, power adapter, data cable, quality earphone, user guide and warranty booklet.

The Micromax A113 handset looks great because of its curvy nature. A113 weight is 150 grams with battery, thickness is 9.96mm, breadth is 69.54mm and the length is 138.52mm. The rear side is grey color with matte finish.Power button is placed on the right, volume rockers on the left and 3.5mm audio jack / micro USB port are placed on the top side. The handset feels good and comfortable to hold.

The LCD screen is 4.7 inches with supported resolution of 960×540 pixels (16M colours). There are accelerometer, light and proximity sensors. The Micromax A113 Canvas Ego comes with 1GB RAM and 4GB internal storage. You can install apps on external storage. Internal storage for apps is 1.31GB and phone storage is 1.41GB. Of 1GB RAM 563 MB is available.

A113 is powered by quad core processor (qualcomm ARM Cortex A5) clocked at 1.2GHz with Adreno 203 GPU. This hardware cannot play 1080p videos in hardware as well as software mode, but 720p videos worked really well.

The rear camera is an auto focus camera with LED flash support. The still picture (long shot) is not that good; you can check the sample images below. Even the video recording in 720p mode is not at all impressive. You can record videos in max 720p resolution. The front camera can be used for video calls.

Gaming experience was not that bad, even with Adreno 203 the game play was pretty good. You can check the gaming review video at the end of this article. The Dead Trigger game was smoother (in high graphics mode) but you could see it lagging a bit with left and right movements. Interestingly the Asphalt 7 and MC4 played really well.In call sound, loudspeaker sound level were average but clear. 3G, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and GPS worked well. I got a lock within 30 seconds. The 2000 mAh battery should give a talk-time of up to 6 hours. I used the handset for approx 35 minutes running benchmark apps – the battery level dropped to 20% and max temperature was 40 degrees.

Conclusion
The A113 dual SIM handset looks good, performance is good, can play high end games, however you cannot play full HD videos and camera quality is not at par. For the price of Rs. 11,999 it’s really not worth it, instead go in for the Micromax A110Q or spend extra money for the Micromax Canvas A116 / Lava Iris 504q.

Key Features of Micromax Canvas EGO A113
  • Android v4.1.2 (Jelly Bean) OS
  • 8 MP Primary Camera
  • Wi-Fi Enabled
  • 4.7-inch LCD Capacitive Touchscreen
  • 1.2 GHz Quad Core Processor
  • 2 MP Secondary Camera
  • Dual SIM (GSM + GSM)
  • Expandable Storage Capacity of 32 GB
