Nokia Asha 501 Now up for Preorder on flipkart

Nokia Asha 501 features a new swipe-based user interface, bringing back memories of the MeeGo running N9. The Asha 501 brings the Lumia design language with flowing curves and a range of bright colors. The device features a 3-inch QVGA touchscreen display, a 3.2-megapixel camera and comes in both dual and single SIM variants. Nokia will bundle a 4GB microSD card in the box. The back removable cover is made of premium finish polycarbonate plastic, which is a rarity at this price point. There is a hot swappable second SIM card slot and a microSD card slot on one edge while the primary SIM card stays under the removable battery. Nokia claims the battery is good enough to provide 17 hours of talktime. The Asha 501 is a 2G-only phone with Wi-Fi connectivity but Nokia says it has a 3G phone in the pipeline.

Hardware aside, the biggest talking point of the Asha 501 is going to be its new swipe based UI, which has been highly inspired by the N9. So you double tap the display to wake up the phone and swipe from the right edge to left to get into the menu. Nokia has introduced a new concept called Fastlane (displayed on the phone on the left above) that features the last 50 tasks that the user has used. This would include phone calls, text messages, notes, music, video, apps, mail and so on. Fastlane is pretty impressive as it brings the concept of multi-tasking without demanding a heavy duty operating system. On the browser front, Nokia is also introducing a Flipboard-like web magazine that it calls Xpress Now. Depending on the country, users can get the latest news that gets customized over a period of time by noticing the user’s likes and dislikes.
