According to the pre-order terms and conditions, interested buyers must pay Rs 5,000 to book their unit. Micromax would announce the specifications and price at a launch event on July 8 and those who have pre-booked a phone will then have an option to either claim for a refund or pay the balance amount within a week to get their phone.
The Canvas series of smartphones have proven to be pretty successful for Micromax and help it make significant gains in the smartphone market share in India. The first smartphone under the series was launched in August last year and since then eight more models have been added in the series, with the Canvas Lite A92 being the latest addition. On April 25, Micromax claimed it sold over a million Canvas smartphones since its launch less than a year ago, instantly making it one of the most popular smartphone series for any Indian handset vendor.
However, things haven’t been without controversy for Micromax. On February 14 this year, the company announced opening online pre-booking of its Canvas HD. The next day, Micromax revealed it had sold over 9,000 units of the phone in the first 24 hours, hitting sales of 25 units per minute. However, the shipments were delayed and many of those who had pre-booked the phone had to wait longer than expected. Then Micromax raised the price of the phone from Rs 13,990 to Rs 14,499, attributing it to new excise rate changes.
Considering the past fiasco, it is interesting that not only has Micromax gone for the pre-booking route for the Canvas 4 but has also made the process murkier by not revealing the price or even the specifications. We reached out to Micromax for the latest pre-order status, 24 hours after it was opened but are yet to hear from the company.
