Apple to launch larger and cheaper iPhone in 2014

The rumor mills have been abuzz recently spewing out leaked photos and specifications of the forthcoming iPhones. Though it is expected that Apple will unveil an iPhone 5S later this year, it is the stories of the rumored cheaper variant and a phablet avatar of the iPhone that have people interested. The Cupertino-based company is apparently working on a less-expensive variant of the iPhone, which it plans to price around $99 and a couple of phablet variants with 4.7 and 5.7-inch displays, Reuters reports citing multiple sources.

Apple is reportedly working on phablet variants of its iPhone to counter Samsung’s dominance in that segment. Sources say that Apple has apparently approached supply chains for larger sized displays for two iPhones with screen sizes of 4.7 and 5.7-inches. These phablets will be unveiled sometime next year.

The cheaper variant, as we have reported before, is expected to be available in five colors and will sport a plastic body. Earlier this month a leaked photo showed a device with a curved back and featuring a 3.5mm audio jack, lightning port and a speaker. As far as specifications are concerned, the phone is expected to sport a 3.5-inch display, an A5 chipset and a 5-megapixel camera. Reuters also mentions that Apple is considering pricing this phone at around $99 (Rs 6,000 approximately) and ship the phone at the end of this year.

Apple also unveiled its massively revamped iOS 7 a couple of days back at WWDC.
